大致意思就是,处于弱势被支配地位的我们都是girl(我模糊地感觉上野千鹤子的书里也有类似的观点)。
首先请看VLR(我最喜欢的SNL sketch之一):
其实工作时脑子里会自动播放的歌还有很多,比如很累的时候会出现查理小程序(girl~ it’s so condusing sometime~ to be girl girl girl girl 摊手):
Yesterday I came up with a line I really liked: “Girl” can be a situation, or it can be an attitude. The former is passive, something you’re put into. The latter is active, something you choose.
Roughly, what I mean is — when we’re in a vulnerable or powerless position, we’re all “girls” in a way (I vaguely remember a similar idea from Ueno Chizuko’s writing). But at the same time, we still have our own power — a way of seeing the world from the margins.
If I were an academic like Ueno, maybe I could write a whole essay unpacking this. But I’m just a tired office worker! So instead, here’s a random collection of fragments circling around the idea.
First, please enjoy VLR (one of my favorite SNL sketches ever):
The past few days, my manager has been making me run a bunch of measurements and simulations — all for the sake of collecting “enough data” to argue with another team. I personally think most of it is meaningless busywork.
While doing those measurements, I realized my brain was looping IVE’s Kitsch — except I kept replacing “kitsch” with “bitch” in the chorus.
After a round of “bitch bitch bitch,” I felt refreshed. It really matches that spoiled rich girl vibe IVE has going on.
Actually, my brain queues up all kinds of songs while I work. When I’m tired, it starts playing Charli XCX — “girl~ it’s so confusing sometime~ to be girl girl girl girl” [shrugs]
And when I really don’t want to face a pile of emails in the morning, Jeon Soyeon comes in clutch:
Honestly, the show that best captures what I’m trying to say is probably Broad City — I’ve been rewatching it recently, and I love it so much I want to write a whole separate post when I’m done.
One last thing — let’s end on a VCR moment! To quote Xiang Biao: “girl as a method.” Have a lovely weekend, everyone!
